Subject: want to cover up black pipe
Question: Hello,
I recently had some black gas pipes put in my family room downstairs except now it is very visible. I would like to cover it up. I have pre formed sheet metal in another part of my house but no where seems to have that anymore. any suggestions on how I can cover this up easily? thanks.
Ivan
Answer: Hello I assume you are just covering for looks. I would, if close to ceiling or wall look into using the styro-foam fake beams, Sometimes it is not a good thing to cover gas pipe that is threaded, but if open at each end I would think OK. Just from a leak stand point and being able to tell right away. I have covered water pipes with this as it is got a hollow area behind to attach to a 2x4. Sorry I could not be of more help. Let me know if you were thinking something different. DB www.espmetro.com www.dry-it-up.com

Subject: Hot water heater won't drain
Question: I wanted to drain my water heater in my cabin ans hut it down for the winter, but only a trickle would come out. Cold water is turned on to the heater. I opened the drain valve at the bottom but just a small amount of clean water came out and then stopped. The hot water heater is quite old. Why doesn't any water come out like it's supposed to when I try to drain it ? What can I do? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Answer: HELLO It is filled with lime/scale dirt, If you have water at cabin you can usually back flush with a garden hose, by hooking them up with a washing machine hose female connector at both ends, this will sometimes clear it or an air compressor. The other case is to remove it. They are just a ¾ pipe thread and do unscrew, however this method is only recommended where you have good drainage. DB www.espmetro.com www.dry-it-up.com
Subject: Plumbing
Question: I have a Price Phister tub and Shower faucet remodeling Kit. What happens if the hot and cold stem are reversed during installation. Thanking you in advance.
Answer: HELLO When you say reversed I am thinking the valve body is in upside down, If so, you could have a problem with water diverting to shower properly. Just the first thing I thought of. As they are made with a top to them, or this side up. As far as hot on cold side it is more on the way the handles turn, than anything. Would be backwards so to speak. But will still shut off. I would be concerned as for the first item I mentioned. Hope this helps. DB www.espmetro.com www.dry-it-up.com

Subject: Ceiling Leak in bathroom after Shower runs
Question: In my upstairs bathroom, the sink is perpendicular to the outside wall (with window), the shower is next to the sink. There is a leak over the sink that appears after the shower has run. It is not a roof leak, as it has rained hard the last week, and there is no leak. Since I stopped using that shower, there is no wetness on the ceiling. Any idea? I am a new homeowner and wonder if I'm going to have to go through the ceiling (yikes!). Thanks for your thoughts.
Answer: Hello Leaks from showers in most homes are not a plumbing issue. It is usually a grouting problem, or water running behind chrome trim, behind a curtain onto floor, or a defective door on shower. If a water pipe leaks it is under pressure and will leak all the time. If it is a bad faucet as the packing and stem it will leak when hot and cold on in wall and is hard to see. Unless you have an access panel, if do then open and turn on and watch. If drain is leaking you can also tell thru an access panel. If you have an access then open and check when shower is in use. Subject: Toilet bowl leak?
Question: Hi, I my toilet bowl will fill after flushing then 8-10 hours later it will have no water in the bowl but the tank will still be full. There is no water around the outside of the bowl. The toilet is on the ground floor so I can't see any leaks from above. The 2 piece unit is tight to the floor and not caulked around the floor.Could the problem be the wax ring needs replacing? or worse? Thanks for your help. John
Answer: HELLO You have a partial blockage in the trap of toilet, this is one cause, I usually recommend every house has a closet auger this is a snake especially for snaking out toilets. Most hardware have them and can give you directions on how to use. Stay away from the el-cheapos, usually have a wooden handle and it breaks. If you buy one I recommend a good solid one usually around $25 to $40 cheap when you consider what they do. This is the most common cause of trap on toilet draining. The other is venting, example is a toilet on first floor or basement not vented properly and then a toilet installed above some where and when flushed, pulls water from toilet bowl. I will however go with partial blockage and it is the cheapest fix. . If have trouble finding a good one let me know as we sell on line. DB www.espmetro.com www.dry-it-up.com

Subject: Combi Boiler
Question: Hi, my pilot lights ok but it takes quite a while before the flame ignights. You can hear it clicking about 5-6 times.
Answer: HELLO That really does not seem like a long time. Unless you are talking minutes. But sounds like it is lighting at around 10-15 seconds or less, Which is about normal. Consider this it can not be instantly, due to in most cases, thermostat calls for heat, then once it calls for heat, starts ignition process, which is the clicking, now once everything is in motion, the gas valve has to release gas into pilot tube, since all previous gas has burned off. Now pilot lights and the heat of pilot, via the thermocouple, creating millivolts of electricity, tells gas valve it has a pilot and is OK TO release more gas, I need to warm this house.
