My views on union or not, was a union plumber for 20 years. Due to circumstances I will not explain I went to work at a non union shop, eventually we went into the Union, What a mistake that was, Our cost went up big time. Again I will not elaborate, I can only say I could not break the ties with them quick enough. Read my article on flat rate. Now if you think that company is paying you $5.00 for every minute they are late, I will give you $10. they just hide it, you are paying yourself. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Seems like now a days plumbers want a piece of the action, a percent of what they bring in, As if these Union Plumbers don't make enough, with benefits, hourly wage, When I worked with the tools I was content with building a happy customer base without ripping them off, I realize most plumbers are honest, but when they have to give a worker a bonus on top of their salary, It is a joke. Our prices are going to stay competitive, we have not raised our prices in 5 years, that is a fact. Every shop has a different overhead for operating, advertising is a big factor, workers compensation is another, ours just went up. If you ever feel like e-mailing me with a question please do so. For more on union info click on link below. I believe that some of the best educated plumbers are union, don't get me wrong, it is when you work for an hourly wage, that is bargained for you, why do they want more. There are a lot of people in this country who do without, and live on a lot less, and are just happy to have a job. For those interested in becoming a plumber and going to school this is where to start. But keep in mind you do not have to go to school to become a plumber. Find an employer show him you want to work, and he will teach you approx 5 years later you can take the test. First step.
If this seems to be contradictng it is not meant to be, the unions have some of the finest educational facilities to teach, It is here to tell you they can't accept everone and won't. Just other options.
