There are a couple of styles of back up sump pumps, those that have a battery and basement buddy. The other back up runs off of a battery, and when the electricity is off that battery is only good for a few hours.

Sump pumps can be installed by an unlicensed individual, who is untrained, or has any knowledge of how or why. Unless it is connected to a city waste connection or water line. So feel free to hire that unlicensed, not insured, untrained individual.
